Testimonials

Testimonials from some of our recent Graduate Recruits:

...I know I have learnt a lot since joining with DWS. I think that there is a great support system set up and being able to work with experienced and highly skilled people is great. Also when I joined there was not a huge amount of pressure placed upon me (i.e. not thrown in to the deep end). This allowed me to settle in and start learning all of the practical skills required... Tyler

...On my first day with DWS, I was a bit nervous as a Graduate I didn't really know what to expect. On the good side, there wasn't much expected from me either I guess. I was lucky enough to be sent to join and existing support team at a client site (or was it arranged that way?), which I think was a very good place to start because I could get pretty much a big picture of the whole project on that site being in the support team.

I was practically learning already the first day on the team. I picked up heaps of 'magic' words concerning the projects there. I didn't understand them straightaway of course which provided me a list of things to ask or find out myself. The guys in the team were very helpful, they told me things that I needed or wanted to know about the project.

The biggest challenge was probably to get productive as soon as possible. The team leader ensured this by giving me a new different task each time I finished one. This also gave me the chance to learn as much as possible about the working environment. I had a bit of knowledge on Oracle from Uni and on this site; I got to learn lots of new stuff on Oracle, which of course is an invaluable gain.

The best thing about working with DWS is the company culture. It is very team-oriented. Everyone in the team is there to support one another. When we need help on a certain skill, it is most likely there is someone in the team who can help us. I had exactly just this experience the other day where someone from the DWS team helped me solve an issue in our project. It did remind me that I am also part of the team and someone will support and help me when I need it (and ask!). So all in all, it has been a great experience working with DWS as a Graduate...Andrew

...for Graduates, being a consultant is a fantastic way to start your career. It gives you the opportunity to work with a broad range of technologies. DWS has a very impressive list of clients with cutting edge projects to work on. I have also found DWS to have a great community spirit. The staff are hard working and passionate about IT, but also friendly and always willing to help out....John

...I believe I was a unique case and probably the first of its kind. I started with DWS on the 17 September 2002 and at the time, I was still an undergraduate in my penultimate year of University. So how did this make my situation unique? Rather than a vacation or co-op position, I committed to a permanent part-time position which had me arriving on site at 5:00 am in the morning! "Crazy" I hear you say? My motivation was not only fuelled by my determination but it had a lot to do with the people I worked with and those who nurtured me during that daunting transition.

DWS made absolutely sure that I was happy and comfortable every chance they got - whether it was at a monthly company meeting in one of Crown's corporate function rooms, a casual visit to the office on Collins Street or one of Danny's eagerly anticipated company events.

With DWS, you get exactly what you put in and the company will always cater to your needs. During my breaks from Uni, I went full-time and changed back to part-time when I had to go back. My desire to contribute and work was heeded and DWS presented the opportunity with full support. This sort of exposure and experience in the 'real world' is something unattainable by attending lectures and tutorials at Uni.

Just a couple of months ago, right out of Uni, I started with DWS as a full-time consultant. I didn't apply for any other graduate positions as I was fully content with where I was. I do not think I would have succeeded if I didn't enjoy all of what I was doing, where I was working or the incredible people I was surrounded with....David

Starting as a Graduate...Thrust straight onto a small project with an experienced fellow consultant who was available full time for support. Skills identified which would allow me to be productive from the outset, and provide some breathing space to 'learn the ropes'. Training arranged to allow me to get up to speed with the skill set of the project. Even when I was the only one on the client site, I never felt isolated as I knew support was only a phone call away. I generally found this introduction to be a good balance.

Challenges ... I was immediately challenged to be productive in an area which was new to me. Constantly needing to pick up new technologies and be productive in them (i.e. can't afford to have 2 weeks 'down time' where we are picking up a new skill set. I personally loved this aspect, and was constantly on the phone to the office asking to be exposed to new and different technologies. Another challenge was that of understanding the culture of being a DWS consultant. Not only are we required to do our technical jobs proficiently, we are also required to do them in the professional manner which is expected of DWS staff.

Skills…. The need to have the ability to be an expert in any technology at any time. Whilst we are placed where ever we are required, we do have input as to what type of work we do.

Learning's... Countless technologies (through both formal and informal training). I learnt how businesses in a number of different business sectors are run. I learnt how to use a quality certified methodology. I learnt how to communicate proficiently with clients.

What I gained from the company... All of the above. Invaluable experience in a number of skill sets and exposure to multiple multi national companies. What's good - the many social events which are held (partners included in almost all of them). Allowing the consultants to get to know each other despite working at different sites. The work. The availability and support of fellow staff members (office and non-office.....Peter
